The Monument
Tussen gevangenis P.I. Nieuw Vosseveld en het Nationaal Monument Kamp Vught loopt een pad begrensd door een hek en een muur. Een open ruimte, een niemandsland, door twee zeer sterke krachten verdeelt. Hier loopt de fragiele lijn tussen vrijheid en vrijheidsberoving. Mijn interesse voor dit terrein lijkt af en toe terug te komen. Nu heeft het zichzelf ingebed in het Invisible Empire-project. De kaart van het terrein ziet er zelf uit als een machine, vreemd dat het op Google Earth te vinden is. Nog een leidende gedachte; bezoekers voor de gevangenis of het nationaal monument gebruiken dezelfde parkeerplaats.
Nationaal Oorlogsmonument Kamp Vught is een grote tentoonstelling over het Duitse regime in het kamp in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het NMKV is in mijn optiek het ethische verlengstuk van Nederland zwaarst bewaakte gevangenis P.I. Nieuw Vossenveld, om een tegenkracht te geven aan de destructieve gedachten die achter de gevangenismuren verborgen zijn. Het NMKV herbergt een zeer belangrijke onzichtbare kracht: het activeert het moraal.
Het werk The Monument bestaat uit een grafische kaart van de maximaal beveiligde gevangenis, een gebouw gelegen in het midden van het hele terrein met gevangenen die als de gevaarlijksten in Nederland worden beschouwd. Daarnaast hangt een kruik met de tekst Guide met riem aan een expositieplankje, het maakt van de kaart een machine. De kruik is een instrument van het onderbewustzijn en verzamelt gedachten vanuit de gevangenis om te neutraliseren.

Between the prison P.I. Nieuw Vosseveld and the National Monument Kamp Vught there is a path bordered by a fence and a wall. An open space, a no man’s land, divided by two very strong forces. This is where the fragile line runs between freedom and deprivation of liberty. My interest in this area seems to return from time to time. Now it has embedded itself in the Invisible Empire project. The map of the terrain itself looks like a machine, strange that it can be found on Google Earth. Another guiding thought; visitors to the prison or national monument use the same parking lot.
National War Memorial Camp Vught is a large exhibition about the German regime in the camp during the Second World War. In my view, the NMKV is the ethical extension of the Netherlands’ most heavily guarded prison P.I. Nieuw Vosseveld, to give a counterforce to the destructive thoughts hidden behind the prison walls. The NMKV houses a very important invisible force. It activates morality.
The work The Monument consists of a graphic map of the maximum security prison, a building located in the middle of the entire site with prisoners considered to be the most dangerous in the Netherlands. In addition, a jug with the text Guide with belt hangs on an exhibition shelf. It turns the map into a machine. The jar is an instrument of the subconscious and collects thoughts from the prison to neutralize.

Invisible Empire: Undefined Spaces
The term “No man’s land” is generally accepted as an unlimited combat area in between two enemy trenches. It is a space that neither side openly wishes to occupy or take control of due to the fear of being attacked in the process. It is also a term for unoccupied land or more specifically, an area that is under dispute between parties and abandoned due to fear or uncertainty. Metaphorically, the concept of “no man’s land” allows us to explore the perception of this ominous and obtuse phrase.
