Encounter and Distillation
Two key components that make up the philosophy of the KetelFactory are the notions of Encounter and Distillation. The encounters take place among artists; but the visitors also have encounters with artists and their work, their sources of inspiration, fascinations and the creative process. We develop this idea further in the Distillation, an in-depth program held for one day. Because the artists process is shown, the focus lies not only with the final result; it becomes possible to see the work in a broader perspective. Lectures, films or music shed light on various aspects of the work, which can thereby undergo a transformation in the Distillation; the art is set in motion, and it sets things in motion. This moreover allows certain affinities among the artists and viewers to be revealed. The video portraits constitute a special segment of our exhibition program. These are brief documentaries on the artists, their work and their inspiration. Each one shows the individual motivations while, as a comprehensive series, they form a moving image of the expansion and refinement of the KetelFactorys policy. Ontmoeting 2 (Encounter 2) revolves around Karin van Pinxteren. The first edition, held jointly with Henk Olijve, dealt with the idea of deliberation: being occupied with something, anticipating, contemplating or discerning traces of things. Here a narrative structure takes shape. In the second edition, carried out together with Roland Schimmel, each artist evokes a spatial experience that demands immediate attention. The performing characters have disappeared; those present are the viewers themselves, who become a physical part of the works. Van Pinxteren has taken work from the first edition Court Dance 2, consisting of seven white ellipses on the wall, and added, opposite that, the white sculpture Receiver. The KetelFactory has been transformed into a spatial stage on which Van Pinxteren’s themes of approach and seclusion are played out. This versatile artist’s passion has been further developed in a collaboration aimed at a fascinating Distillation.

Karin van Pinxteren is de spil binnen de gehele tentoonstelling. Van Pinxteren werkt zowel met de handeling als met ruimtelijke existentie en maakt voor Ontmoeting #2 een werk dat van de 1e naar de 2e editie zal transformeren.

In overleg met De Ketelfactory zijn Henk Olijve en Roland Schimmel uitgenodigd. Ontmoeting heeft niet alleen betrekking op de tentoonstelling zelf maar ook op de dialoog tussen de kunstenaars die al in de periode van voorbereiding is begonnen. Daarnaast organiseert De Ketelfactory samen met de kunstenaars een programma voor publiek dat ‘De Distillatie’ wordt genoemd. Het geeft een uitgebreid beeld van de kunstenaar en zijn inspiratiebronnen. De expositieperiode wordt een dynamisch geheel van verschuivingen binnen de totale tentoonstelling. De steeds wisselende ontmoetingen van de kunstenaars en de drie ‘Distillaties’ zullen de werken een andere context geven. De tijdsduur van ruim 10 weken biedt de mogelijkheid dit allemaal te laten ontstaan.
