Collector

In ‘Collector’, seventh of a series of hostess performances from the year 2000, the artist positions herself under cover at the entrance of a large art exhibition, posing as a hostess. Every visitor receives a stamp on his or her right hand with the text: ‘Part of my collection’.

With this stamp the artist is one step ahead of the visitor. As soon one has set foot in the exhibition space, one becomes part of an art piece. For several hours, this collection is mutually connected – until the ink fades away and finally disappears. Through the act of stamping the their hands the artist wants to imprint a certain degree of seriousness and proximity on the visitors of StressedSpaces.

Both the visitor and the collection are important parts of the artist’s world, this is a serious matter. The visitors come and go and the ink is fading quickly by the friction of movement and by the moisture from the skin. Nothing is standing still, everything is in motion. This artwork cannot be preserved. The collection ‘Collector’ is falling apart immediately, but has existed nonetheless. Triumph and tragedy of a collection compressed in a few hours.

Bezoekers en collecties zijn een serieus onderdeel van de wereld van de kunstenaar, het zijn belangrijke zaken. Hier positioneert ik me under cover als gastvrouw bij de entree van de grote tentoonstelling StressedSpaces. Elke bezoeker ontvangt een stempel met de tekst ‘Part of my collection’ op zijn of haar rechterhand.

Door deze stempel ben ik, de kunstenaar, de bezoeker voor, zodra men de tentoonstelling betreedt wordt men deel van het kunstwerk. Voor een aantal uren is deze collectie onderling verbonden totdat de inkt vervaagt en uiteindelijk verdwijnt. Door het moment van het zetten van de stempeltekst wil ik de bezoeker een mate van ernst meegeven en dichtbij ze komen.

Bezoekers komen en gaan en de inkt verdwijnt snel door de mate van beweging en door de vochtigheid van de huid. Niets staat stil, alles is in beweging. Dit kunstwerk kan niet worden bewaard en de collectie ‘Collector’ valt spoedig uiteen, maar het heeft bestaan. Het is de triomf en tragiek van een collectie verdicht in enkele uren.
