‘Authorized Dealer’ is the title of my work for Project Mong Kok, Crossing Border Festival Hong Kong, October 2020 on invitation by Andrew Lam, director, chief and curator. The project is sponsored by the embassy of The Kingdom of the Netherlands Hong Kong.

In Mong Kok, an old neighborhood in Hong Kong where there is a lot of trade, the ellipse is present in street signs. A local ellipse tells of a karaoke nightclub, a place where a song is sung over and over, copied over and over in an attempt to express emotion. A universal signboard of a sanitary brand in the shape of an ellipse bears the words Authorized Dealer. A location where the original brand is sold among all other stores with copies, the brand that invented itself through research, more expensive but better. Kepler’s First Law framed around the year 1600 that all planets move around the sun in elliptical orbits, which means that this form applies infinitely to the earth and therefore to all its inhabitants.
We like to copy but in the core of our being we are authentic and not counterfeit. Singing songs because we can feel them, carry our emotions apart from gravity. We try to caress our ellipse, reflecting intense human forces on the surface of the earth, like tension, passion, love and violence.
In Mong Kok, een oude wijk in Hong Kong waar veel wordt gehandeld, is de ellips aanwezig in straatborden. Een lokale ellips vertelt over een karaoke nachtclub, een plek waar een lied keer op keer wordt gezongen, keer op keer wordt gekopieerd in een poging tot het uitdrukking van emotie. Een universeel uithangbord van een sanitairmerk in de vorm van een ellips draagt de woorden Authorized Dealer. Een winkel waar het originele merk wordt verkocht tussen alle andere winkels met kopieën. Het merk dat vanuit onderzoek zichzelf heeft uitgevonden, duurder maar beter. In Mong Kok loop je onder het spel en de waarden van origineel en kopie.
De eerste wet van Kepler zegt rond het jaar 1600 dat alle planeten in elliptische banen om de zon bewegen, wat betekent dat deze vorm oneindig van toepassing is op de aarde en daardoor op al haar bewoners. Zo horen mens en ellips bij elkaar.
We kopiëren graag maar als persoon zijn we authentiek en geen vervalsing. We zingen liedjes na omdat we het kunnen en willen voelen en dragen onze emoties los van de zwaartekracht.
In de performance probeert een mens de oneindige baan van de ellips te strelen, en weerspiegelt door het rode vlak intense menselijke krachten op het aardoppervlak, zoals spanning, passie, liefde en geweld.

“參觀旺角是一次冒險。在哪裡看？怎麼聽？我的眼睛緊貼橢圓形符號，實際上是兩個橢圓形燈箱招牌符號。當然我看不懂，所以安德魯·林（Andrew Lam）幫我翻譯了一下：藍色：夜總會，黑色：卡拉OK夜總會。在旺角，橢圓形出現在路牌上。當地的一個橢圓形場所講述了一個卡拉OK夜總會，那裡是一遍又一遍地唱歌，反复複製，表達情感的地方。品牌的通用標牌上刻有“授權經銷商”字樣，在該位置上，所有其他商店中出售的都是真正的原始衛生用品，但價格更高，但更好。”

Visiting Mong Kok is an adventure. Where to look? How to listen? My eye clings on an ellips sign, actually two ellips signs. Of course I can’t read it so Andrew Lam translates it for me: blue: Night Club and black: Karaoke Night Club.
Mong Kok bezoeken is een avontuur. Waar naar te kijken en hoe te luisteren? Mijn oog blijft hangen aan een ellipsen uithangbord of eigenlijk twee ellipsen. Natuurlijk begrijp ik niet wat er staat en Andrew Lam vertaalt het voor me: blauw: Nachtclub en zwart: Karaoke Nachtclub.
